Membrane protection

At the industrial park in Echternach in Luxembourg, a rainwater retention and emergency basin was put into operation in the spring. Under normal conditions, the retention basin is designed to store surface water accumulating in the industrial park and discharge it in a controlled manner via a drainage structure. In the event of an accident, contaminated firefighting water and any chemicals are discharged into the tank and the gate valve in the drainage structure is closed. The failure occurred in late summer. The basin was sealed with a plastic sealing
membrane, which was covered with approximately 25 cm of soil. During the removal of the contaminated soil, the seal was massively damaged.

A makeshift repair of the plastic sealing membrane was carried out during the winter period.

When defining the 'new' waterproofing concept, care was taken to ensure that the waterproofing was protected by a solid protective layer. This is to prevent damage during the removal of the earth covering. TILTEX 9 was chosen as the protective layer alternatively to other solutions such as shotcrete.

TILTEX 9 is an extremely durable textile-reinforced concrete mat that can be adapted to a wide range of requirements.
